FLEXnet™ Procedures for Concurrent License Customers Print E-mail
Note: For SlickEdit 2008 and later releases, please visit www.slickedit.com/flexnet

The instructions below are for SlickEdit 2007 and earlier products.

SlickEdit® uses Macrovision FLEXnet Publisher (formerly FLEXlm) for concurrent license management. All new and existing concurrent license customers will use FLEXnet Publisher to authorize each SlickEdit product user within their environment. (This does not apply to individuals who purchase individual user licenses.)

The procedure for installing and using FLEXnet Publisher is outlined completely in the following steps.

Follow the steps in the order presented and read through each step before proceeding. You may wish to print this page to use as a guide.

• If you need assistance, contact SlickEdit Product Support at 1.919.473.0100 or support@slickedit.com.

• Instructions for using FLEXnet Publisher are detailed in the Macrovision FLEXnet Licensing End User Guide (PDF).

Download FLEXnet Server

1. Click the appropriate platform below for the operating system for the computer that will host the FLEXnet server, and download the compressed file. This computer will be referred to as the FLEXnet server from now on.
  • Microsoft® Windows® XP/2000/NT
  • Linux® x86
  • Solaris™ SPARC®
  • AIX
  • IRIX®
  • HP-UX®
  • 2. Extract the files to a temporary folder.

    3. Copy all the files from the temporary folder to the designated folder you choose on the FLEXnet server. This folder will be referred to as the FLEXnet folder in subsequent steps.

For Windows platforms, the default location to copy to is C:\FLEXnet. For UNIX® and Linux platforms, select a location. Create these folders as needed.

If you have an existing FLEXnet installation, you can choose whether or not to overwrite the old files.

    Generate the License File

    4. You will need to generate a FLEXnet FEATURE line in this step. Please read the following steps in this section to make sure you have the necessary information to generate your FEATURE line.

Click here to go to the license generation page.

This page is used to generate the license file that is needed to authorize the SlickEdit products in your enterprise.

    5. Enter the installation key that is found on the CD case, or that was sent via e-mail if you ordered online. Keep this number handy as you will need it again each time the SlickEdit product is installed on a client.

    6. Select the platform of your FLEXnet server from the drop-down list.

    7. Enter your hostid. You can determine this using the following procedure:
    a. Open a command line window.
    b. Navigate to the FLEXnet folder.
    c. Run lmutil lmhostid. Note the space between lmutil and lmhostid.
    d. If the system returns more than one hostid, use the first one that appears on the list.
    8. Enter the hostname. If you are not sure of the FLEXnet server's hostname, you can run hostname from a command line on the FLEXnet server.

    9. The port number field will be pre-populated with the default value of 27000. Use this port number unless you have a specific need to change it.

    10. You can specify that the license file is also sent to an e-mail address. This is optional since the file will appear after the next step.

    Save and Configure License.dat

    11. Click the Continue button. The license file will be generated and put into a file called license.dat. A new page appears that contains a link to license.dat.

    12. Click the license.dat link on this new page. A dialog box appears where you can specify where this file is to be saved. Save this file to the FLEXnet folder.

    13. Go to the FLEXnet folder and open license.dat in a text editor.

    14. Edit the vendor path to match the path for the FLEXnet folder. When you are finished it should look something like:
    VENDOR vsflex C:\FLEXnet\vsflex.exe (Windows)
where C:\FLEXnet is the path to the FLEXnet folder and vsflex.exe is the daemon that checks each installation of the SlickEdit product to make sure it is authorized to run.

The UNIX and Linux path should reflect the path and folder you chose in Step 3.

Leave the rest of this file as is. Save and close it.

Start the FLEXnet Server and Install the Client

    15. Start the FLEXnet server by opening a command line on the FLEXnet server while in the FLEXnet folder and typing:
    lmgrd -c license.dat
    16. Set the environment variable on each client as follows:

    On Windows:
    a. Go to Control Panel > System > Advanced Tab > Environment Variables. A dialog box appears.
    b. Click New under System Variables. Another dialog box appears.
    c. Enter LM_LICENSE_FILE in the top field.
    d. Enter port@hostname in the bottom field. The default port is 27000 (as stated in Step 9). The hostname is the same one entered in Step 8.
    e. Click OK on each open dialog box until they are all closed.
On UNIX or Linux, type export LM_LICENSE_FILE=port@hostname on the command line. The default port is 27000 (as stated in Step 9). The hostname is the same one entered in Step 8.

    Install the Client

    17. Install the SlickEdit product onto each local client machine for which you have a license, by following the installation instructions that came with the product CD.

    18. When asked for a license key, enter the same key used in Step 5. The client keys must match the one entered in Step 5. The daemon will compare them and they must match in order for the SlickEdit product to run.

    Start SlickEdit

At this point, you can start the SlickEdit product on each client machine.
